Special Weather Statement

Statement as of 3:15 PM PDT on October 09, 2008

Expires 8:00 AM EDT on October 11, 2008

... Gusty northerly winds and much cooler temperatures for the end
of the week...
... Moderate offshore event expected early next week...

A small trough just west of British Columbia will amplify into a
very cold low pressure system and drop into Nevada by Friday
night. The cold air associated with this system will induce high
pressure at the surface to the north... setting up a strong north
to south pressure gradient over the region. This gradient... along
with a strong jet aloft... will create gusty and potentially strong
northerly winds across a large portion of southern and central
California. Wind gusts are expected to peak to around 50 mph in
the windiest spots but gusts near 60 mph... especially through the
Interstate 5 corridor... are not out of the question. These winds
will result in gale force wind gusts over 40 kt across the outer
waters.

The magnitude and drying effect of these winds will create
favorable conditions for fire growth... especially over the
interior valleys and mountain ranges.

This system will also cool the region... as most areas will see
more than 20 degrees of cooling by Saturday from what we
experienced on Wednesday. Enough cold air will reach the interior
valleys and mountains to create cold overnight temperatures.
These temperatures are expected to reach into the 30s Saturday and
Sunday morning which may result in some local frost.

As this system moves eastward... surface high pressure will shift
into the Great Basin. This is expected to result in gusty
offshore winds through and below many passes and canyons. Gusts at
this point are expected to peak in the 50 mph range. These winds
will also not only warm up temperatures yet again... but will may
also create another round of favorable conditions for explosive
fire growth.
