Public Information Statement

Statement as of 6:04 AM EST on February 01, 2015

... January 2015 was warmer than normal across east central Florida...

While several cold fronts moved through the region... the cooler
weather they produced remained very brief with overall average
temperatures above normal in January. Most of the time rainfall that
accompanied these boundaries either weakened before moving into the
area or was light to non existent. However an increase in convection
associated with a passing disturbance mid month led to much of the
precipitation that fell across east central Florida. Areas that
experienced heavier rainfall during this event generally ended up
with near to above normal rainfall for January while other locations
were drier than normal.

.Temperatures...

The month started off much warmer than normal with most sites tying
or breaking their high and warmest low temperature records on the
3rd and 4th. A stronger cold front that moved through a few days
later led to a short duration of colder weather on the 8th and 9th
with daily average temperatures up to 5 to 10 degrees below normal.
Orlando International Airport dropped to 38 degrees on the morning
of the 8th which was the first time it had dropped below 40 degrees
at this site since February 14th of last year. Several additional
weak fronts moved through the state during the rest of the month.
However any periods of cooler weather that followed were usually
limited... except for the last several days of January when below
normal temperatures generally lingered.

Overall average monthly temperature departures ranged between 1 to 3
degrees above normal across the region.

Daily record temperatures for the month:

Daytona Beach:
-January 3rd: tied record high of 83 degrees set in 1947 and 1924.
-January 4th: record warm low of 69 degrees. Previous record was 66
degrees set in 1993 and 1973.

Orlando:
-January 3rd: record warm low of 67 degrees. Previous record was 66
degrees set in 1993.

Melbourne:
-January 3rd: record warm low of 73 degrees. Previous record was 69
degrees set in 1993.
-January 4th: tied record high of 85 degrees set in 1972.

Vero beach:
-January 3rd: tied record warm low of 72 degrees set in 2007. Also
tied record high of 83 set in 2006 and 1997.
-January 4th: record high of 86 degrees. Previous record was 84
degrees set in 1997.

Average temperature values for January 2015 at the four primary
climate sites across east central Florida are as follows (rankings
provided if in the top 10):

-Daytona Beach had an average monthly temperature of 59.4 degrees
fahrenheit, which was 1.5 degrees above normal.

-Orlando had an average monthly temperature of 62.0 degrees
fahrenheit, which was 1.8 degrees above normal.

-Melbourne had an average monthly temperature of 62.9 degrees
fahrenheit, which was 2.6 degrees above normal.

-Vero Beach had an average monthly temperature of 64.3 degrees
fahrenheit, which was 2.2 degrees above normal.

.Rainfall...

An inverted trough offshore during the first couple days of January
generally produced light rainfall amounts along the coast. A squall
line ahead of an approaching weak front on the 4th dissipated before
moving into east central Florida with little to no rainfall
occurring as the boundary moved through the region. Precipitation
remained scarce until the 12th when an increase in moisture combined
with a passing disturbance aloft produced widespread rainfall with
embedded storms and heavy rain bands over central Florida. The
highest amounts around 2 to 3.5 inches fell from Osceola County
northward through Northern Lake and interior Volusia counties... as
well as across central Brevard County. Several weak fronts moved
through during the remainder of the month but for the most part
produced little in the way of rainfall. The one exception was with a
band of rain that preceded a frontal boundary late on the 23rd into
the morning of the 24th that generated a half inch to one inch
totals across lake and Volusia counties.

Much of the region saw near to above normal rainfall for January.
However those locations that received lower precipitation amounts on
the 12th ending up drier than normal... including along the Treasure
Coast.

January 2015 rainfall totals for the four primary climate sites
across east central Florida are as follows (rankings provided if in
the top 10):

-Daytona Beach received 2.55 inches of rain for the month, which was
0.19 inches below normal.

-Orlando received 3.52 inches of rain for the month, which was 1.17
inches above normal.

-Melbourne received 2.48 inches of rain for the month, which was
0.21 inches above normal.

-Vero Beach received 1.15 inches of rain for the month, which was
1.35 inches below normal.
